Trigger Point Therapy for Horses

A common comment is that the horse can't tell you where it feels pain so it must be more difficult to treat horses than people.

This is a myth. The horse will always tell us where their pain is - we just need to understand how the horses communicates.

The horse will always blink when you are working on an active trigger point.

The horse will half close its eyes when you are at the correct pressure.

The horse will blink at exactly the same time as the trigger point releases.

The horse will give two quick blinks followed by a third blink if you don't notice its first signal and release your pressure.

If youʼre still not getting the message, the horse will re-adjust its stance and try to move you off.

The horse may try to kick or bite - so watch those eyes and look and listen to its signals.

About Andy Eckley

Andy Eckley is a trigger point therapist and equine therapist who has a private practice in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire in the north of England.

Andy is certified in a number of NAT techniques, and has successfully adapted some of these for the treatment of horses.

In addition to his practice, Andy works with vets and massage therapists in various countries in Europe.

He teaches professionals who work with horses to better detect and treat pain in the animals.

As a soft tissue therapist and equine therapist, Andy believes strongly that “often, the test of an effective treatment is whether it works on animals.”

Andy also works as an animal safety representative on the sets of films for the American Humane Association.

In this role, he makes sure that the animals on the set are taken care of properly and are not mistreated. He has worked recently on American television commercials, Disney movies, and on the set of two Johnny Depp films.
